Research Interests:

Pluripotency can be induced in mouse and human somatic cells by the forced expression of OCT4, SOX2 with either the combinations of KLF4, MYC or NANOG, LIN28 (Takahashi and Yamanaka, 2006; Takahashi et al., 2007; Yu et al., 2007; Park et al., 2007). In human, iPS cells are commonly generated from fibroblasts. However, the requirement to perform skin biopsy on the human donors and the need to grow the fibroblast cells for several passages in vitro has limited its use as an efficient source for generating patient-specific stem cells. We are directing our efforts to investigate novel ways of establishing iPS cells from cell types that are more accessible and requiring lesser manipulations. The ability to reprogram from these cells will facilitate the development of therapeutically safe and reliable methods towards the generation of patient-specific stem cells.
